Yes — ads have been live for Canadian advertisers since April 2026 and you can open an advertiser account. Whether you should is a different question. As of October 2026 targeting is country-level only, so a single-location practice would pay to reach all of Canada. Management of this channel is included in our Practice Scale plan, activated when it can actually reach your patients.

A Canadian dental clinic can open a ChatGPT advertiser account, but as of October 2026 campaigns target by country with no province, city or postal-code option, and no demographic, remarketing or device audiences. For a practice whose patients come from a 10-kilometre radius, that means paying to reach the entire country. We recommend waiting for sub-national targeting and putting the budget into earning citations in AI answers instead, which costs nothing per impression.
OpenAI began serving ads in ChatGPT in February 2026 and confirmed them live for Canadian advertisers in April 2026. We get asked whether a dental practice should be buying them. For most single-location clinics the honest answer today is no, and the reason is specific: as of October 2026 campaign geography is country-level only. A Toronto practice cannot buy Toronto. It buys Canada.
What's Included
Straight Eligibility Read
Whether your practice is actually the exception — multi-location, national catchment, or a product rather than a chair — in one conversation, at no charge on any plan.
Quarterly Platform Watch
We track targeting granularity, objectives and documented availability each quarter, and tell you when the channel becomes viable for your footprint.
Account Setup When It Is Time
Advertiser account, campaign structure, context hints and creative. Included in the Practice Scale plan, built once targeting supports your catchment or immediately for a national footprint.
Budget Reallocation Plan
Where the money goes meanwhile: AI search optimization, Google Ads radius campaigns, and the pages that earn citations for free.
Measurement Before Launch
Tracked calls and form attribution in place first, so the channel can be judged on booked appointments rather than impressions.
What are ChatGPT ads?
Sponsored placements shown inside ChatGPT conversations, bought through OpenAI’s own Ads Manager rather than through Google. The unit is a headline, a short description and an optional square image — closer to a text ad than to anything visual.
They appear only for people on the free and lower-cost tiers. Anyone paying for Plus, Pro, Business or Enterprise sees no ads at all. That matters for a dental practice, because the patient demographic most able to pay out of pocket for elective treatment is also the one most likely to be on a paid plan.
OpenAI has stated that ads are labelled and do not influence the assistant’s answers. Being cited in the answer itself is a separate, unpaid thing — and for a clinic it is the more valuable of the two.
Why country-only targeting breaks the maths for a clinic
Dental demand is geographic in a way almost no other category is. A patient will not drive across a province for a cleaning. The usable catchment for a single location is a handful of postal codes.
Google Ads has let advertisers buy a radius around an address for two decades, which is why local dental campaigns work at all. ChatGPT ads currently do not. Every impression served outside the catchment is spend with no possible return — not low return, no return.
This is why we are not selling ChatGPT ad management to single-location practices. A multi-location group with national coverage, or a dental brand selling a mail-order product, is a genuinely different case and we will look at it.
What we would do instead with the same budget
The reason patients are asking ChatGPT about dentistry is the same reason AI Overviews now answer 94% of cost questions in our 100-keyword Canadian sample: people want the research done before they call. The way to be present in that conversation is to be a source it draws on.
That work costs nothing per impression, does not stop when a budget stops, and is not restricted by a targeting system. It is also the same content a clinic needs for ordinary search — a real cost page, an honest comparison page, a candidacy page.
Alongside it, Google Ads still buys a radius around the practice, and the map pack still decides who gets the call for local intent. Those are the channels where a clinic’s budget is currently efficient.
When would this change?
One condition, mainly: targeting below country level in Canada. Province would help a little; city or postal-code radius would make it a real channel for a single practice overnight.
Two secondary things we watch. Whether conversion-objective bidding matures, because views and clicks are not what a clinic is buying. And what a click actually costs once the auction has more advertisers in it — early reported figures are unreliable and come from third parties rather than OpenAI.
We check the platform’s availability and targeting documentation each quarter. If you are already a client, this is part of the monthly review rather than something you need to ask about.
What we will not do
We will not switch on a national ChatGPT campaign for a single-location clinic just because a plan has a line for it. Practice Scale includes AI ad platform management, and for a single site that currently means the quarterly platform watch plus a campaign built the moment targeting can reach your catchment — not spend on impressions that cannot convert.
We also will not quote performance figures for this channel. There is no reliable public dental benchmark for ChatGPT ads, the platform is months old, and the numbers circulating in agency blog posts are not sourced from OpenAI. When we have data from accounts we run, we will publish it and say how it was measured.
What we will do is give you a straight read on whether your practice is the exception, and set it up properly if it is.

FAQ
Because dental demand is local and the platform cannot currently target locally. There is no province, city or postal-code option, and no remarketing. Spend served outside your catchment has no path to a booked appointment. This is a targeting limitation, not an opinion about the platform.
We will not quote a number. The cost figures circulating online come from third-party agency posts rather than OpenAI, the auction is young, and reported minimum spends have changed repeatedly through 2026. Check OpenAI’s own advertiser documentation for current pricing.
No. Ads appear on the free and lower-cost tiers only; Plus, Pro, Business and Enterprise subscribers see none. For elective dental treatment that removes a meaningful part of the audience most able to pay privately.
No, and the difference matters. Ads are paid placements beside the conversation. AI search optimization is the unpaid work of becoming a source the answer itself cites. The second has no geographic restriction, no cost per impression, and does not stop when a budget does.
Sub-national targeting in Canada — province at minimum, city or radius ideally. Practice Scale includes that quarterly review, and we switch campaigns on for you when it happens rather than waiting to be asked.
